Letter to the editor of The Cambodia Daily
on safety issues

It is never nice to be a victim of a felony or a crime, but it is no excuse for loosing complete sense of reality. Who is out on the street at 10.45pm, is going around in wealthy BKK1, is visibly wearing a laptop, should not be surprised to be robbed of $400, credit cards and a mobile phone. Who is carrying around all this at night is an easy prey and a worthwhile haul for predators. I am living in Cambodia almost 6 years now and got robbed only once in 2003. I partly have to blame this on myself because I was wearing headphones and could not hear the perpetrators coming from behind. They stole my mobile phone but let me keep my only cash: 8000 Riel.
I disagree with recently robbed Eduardo and Jane that Cambodia is the most dangerous country (they lived in). In average Cambodian people are very friendly and helpful, and are very worried and ashamed if anything bad happens to a foreigner. Aggression and extreme violence are a part of their culture and their daily life, but only seldom foreigners are victims of it; it is more or less domestic violence that is prevalent. As long as you remain a respectful (and clever) guest, it is unlikely that you will make a negative experience. The chance is probably as big as in most other countries in the world that something bad will happen to you. As a Dutch person who lived in or visited cities as Berlin, London, New York, Nairobi or Lagos, I advice everybody who really wants to go to an annoying and dangerous place to visit Amsterdam and Eindhoven on a Saturday night.
